Thursday Themes – J.V. Baptie

Spread the love

Today, I’m delighted to be able to welcome J.V. Baptie to my Thursday Themes blog, and to say congratulations on a successful launch of The Forgotten.

What if everything was a lie?

The forgotten is a dark, gritty crime novel set in Edinburgh in the seventies.  Newly-promoted but not welcome in CID, Detective Sergeant Helen Carter is tasked with investigating a murder in an old abandoned picture house. The killer has left a clue: the business card of an ex-cop. Helen must piece together the case before the bodies mount up around her, and before the killer strikes closer to home…

There are several main themes that run through The Forgotten:  mainly love, trust, revenge and the ripple effect of murder, and the mark that leaves on its victims and their families.  Helen has a lot to contend with in order to solve this murder case and she has to make some difficult choices in her own personal life along the way. As the novel progresses she doesn’t know who she can trust and in a department that doesn’t want her she has to work twice as hard as her other colleagues for half the recognition. Grief and loss also takes centre stage.

My novel also explores the difficulties of being a female police officer at the time and life for women in general in the seventies. For example, the struggle to be taken seriously, the sexism, and the long-term impact of crime on people. I tried to write the novel that I’ve been wanting to read. I was bored of the expected detective.

The Forgotten is released on June 13th through Crooked Cat Books.
