10 Year Novel-Writing Anniversary

Spread the love

Today, I’m celebrating 10 years since I started writing novels!

A little over 10 years ago, I heard about NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) and was inspired to try to write a 50000 word novel in the month of November 2011 (actually, my husband suggested that I give it a go. He clearly had more confidence in my abilities than I did.)

After some thought, during which strange ideas of new worlds, fantastic creatures and magic vied for attention, I decided to rein it in a bit and start small with a ‘closed room’ concept crime thriller. The Brotherhood was born!

I started writing on 1-November-2011, and wrote about 20000 words in that first month. Most of them were awful, but my husband discerned enough talent to encourage me to keep going!

It only took 6 years for me to write, rewrite, rewrite again, edit, re-edit and polish The Brotherhood ready for it to be submitted, and I was lucky enough to get it published with Crooked Cat (subsequently moving to Darkstroke)

Along the way, I’ve been spurred on, inspired and learned loads from 2 fabulous writing groups – Manchester Scribes and Writers United. I’ve made oodles of friends – amazing, wonderful people who write in all different genres and styles. I’ve developed my own writing style, and now have 4 crime thrillers published and another in progress (currently about halfway through).
