Thursday Themes – Sparks by Trisha Thacker

Spread the love

I’m delighted to welcome Trisha Thacker to my blog today with her new novel, Sparks (which just happens to be the name of my favourite band!) Trisha is here to talk about the themes of this exciting story.

Fateh lives in a world much like our own, but adjacent to what we think of as the ‘real’ world. He lives in the woods, up in the mountains with his mother. He is near a town that was overrun by a powerful type of fae called Shadows. In the process, he has to learn about his sense of self and who he can trust. His friends, Meira and Tobias, want to fight the Shadows that have cropped up in the world, but Fateh wants to live with them and not make a fuss. He follows the rules his grandparents taught him, which is to not engage with the fae. He doesn’t trust the fae, but he cant trust the humans that are supposedly on his side. Fateh feels apart from everyone around him.

But changes are coming and he has to figure out what side he’s on. The book explores the bounds of loyalty and trust, both in yourself and those that surround you. In this book, Fateh has to deal with his friends being in a rebel group. There are uncertain situations, and he has to open up and see what side of the fight he’s really on.

Tabor is an old friend, but he is also friends with the Shadows, so Fateh can’t trust him, even while his mother urges him to make a deal with him, to save his life for when things get truly dire. When she dies, Fateh is left with no one to trust, not even himself.

When Fateh is locked away in the school for fae-touched children, he meets a host of new people that have had their lives touched by the fae. He is finally in an environment of those that understand him, but he still is reluctant to learn about the other fae that had invaded his world.

He meets Randi, a girl that is much like himself, but to where her world was upended by trolls. Fateh learns there are much more fae out there than just the Shadows. There is also Marisa, a Seer who can look inside Fateh and sense the secrets that even he doesn’t know about. Can he trust what she says? When she gives a warning that saves his life, he starts to rethink what she told him and what he can believe.

When he is paired with Tabor, he really has to learn how to trust and look inside himself. He gets the shock of his life when his heritage is revealed and the only one he can trust now is Tabor. Fateh learns more about himself and the world than he ever thought possible and in the end, chooses a side to be on.

He ends up traveling far away from home and meets up with someone entirely different, he has to trust further, even as he is told that he can’t trust for long. Everything is turned on its head and Fateh is thrust into a whole new world.

Loyalty and friendship are tested in this book and knowing your sense of self is key to surviving. “Sparks” is a novel about a young man dealing with the impossible and having to understand himself before understanding the world.

About the Book:

Fateh’s life was as ordinary as it could be with the Fae. He deals with Tabor, an annoying but familiar presence. The fact that he’s one of the Fae complicates things.

Is he a friend or an enemy?

He plots with his friends Meira and Tobias to find the best way to survive. Either learn to live with the Fae or get rid of them altogether.

His friends want to overthrow the Fae. But what consequences will Fateh face if he helps? He has a difficult decision to make and when tragedy strikes, will everything go up in smoke?

Trapped in an unfamiliar world, Fateh will have to decide which is more important– his humanity or his survival.

About the Author:

I have two cats, Ginger and Kai, which are the love of my life. I live in the sunny southwest, but you can find me hiding from the sun with a cup of tea in one hand and a taco in another. I love urban fantasy and faerie tales and some of my favorites are reimagined in beautiful ways. I watch Mythbusters to relax by, because who doesn’t love science with a side of explosions ? I’ve always been a writer and I’m so happy to be able to share all my stories.
